Professor Robert Delatolla, a native of Montreal, Quebec, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa and a Principal Investigator at the Center for Research on Environmental Microbiology (CREM). He is a member of the American Society of Chemical Engineers (ACS) and the Canadian Association of Water Quality (CAWQ). 

Professor Delatolla received his Ph.D. from the Department of Chemical Engineering at McGill University.  During his Ph.D. work, Professor Delatolla modified and used molecular and microscopic techniques to investigate the microbial populations responsible for removing ammonia from Canadian wastewater treatment plants.  His industrial experience includes collaborative research ventures with Veolia Water and John Meunier Inc. This collaborative work investigated the optimization of advanced wastewater treatment systems.  He also worked as a Environmental Engineer and Project Manager at Gartner Lee Ltd. and Biogenie S.R.D.C. Inc., where he conducted soil and groundwater remediation projects.  Professor Delatolla’s Master’s thesis investigated the hydraulic flow regime of lagoon treatment systems.
 
Professor Delatolla’s current research is focused on critical water issues of developed and developing nations.  His expertise lie in the development and modification of microbial investigative techniques for the direct application to engineered systems such as wastewater and drinking water treatment plants.  He has particular interest in confocal and environmental microscopy and in-situ hybridization techniques of cells.  He is currently applying these microscopic and molecular techniques to the investigation of problematic pollutant removal in Canadian waters.
Professor Delatolla’s diverse background in geological, civil and chemical engineering has also lead to a diverse list of research interests.  He is interested in the areas of biological, chemical and physical water treatment processes, solid waste treatment and site remediation.  Professor Delatolla is currently working on the structural and ecological investigation of biofilms in water treatment plants; advanced and economical removal technologies for emerging contaminants; and biologically mediated oxidation of landfill gases in bio-covers.
