Policy on Special Student Registration
Because of the professional nature of its programs (which are accredited at the national level), the Faculty of Engineering only allows students admitted to one of its programs to register for engineering and computer science courses.
Under exceptional circumstances and for reasons both valid and proven, the Faculty may grant permission for a special student to take a course. Following is an overview of possible conditions and the supporting documents required.
-
a) Academic upgrade for admission to graduate studies:
- i. Provide written confirmation, either from the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies or from the department concerned, that an academic upgrade is necessary for admission to a graduate program.
- ii. Submit written confirmation, either from the research supervisor or department chair, that the course requested will be recognized toward the required upgrade. b) Academic upgrade for re-admission following a mandatory withdrawal:
- i. Following the mandatory withdrawal, the student must have already completed the science courses required for the upgrade, and have received marks which show a possibility of re-admission to the Faculty of Engineering.
- ii. Submit a written request indicating why the student wants to take this specific engineering or computer science course during the given session, and arguing why the Faculty should make an exception in this case.
- iii. Provide an official transcript for any upgrading courses taken outside the University of Ottawa.
- N.B. The Faculty reserves the right to limit the number of courses a special student can take under this condition. c) Professional development:
- i. Student must possess previous education relevant to the field of the course requested, and provide official transcripts.
- ii. Submit a written request indicating why the student needs to take a specific engineering or computer science course during the given session.
- iii. Provide written confirmation from the employer or professional organization requesting that the student takes this course. d) Other:
- It is up to the student to show the need for the course requested, as well as to provide supporting documents.
- N.B.: In every case, it is necessary to fulfill the prerequisite courses, as indicated in the course description.
Please note that fulfilling these criteria does not guarantee that permission to take a course as a special student will be granted. Every request will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. In addition, successful completion of the course does not guarantee admission to the Faculty of Engineering.
Once the request is approved, the student needs to complete the special student registration form (http://www.uottawa.ca/academic/info/index/Regi3140.pdf) and submit it to the Undergraduate Studies Secretariat. Please do not forget to indicate the section, DGD and LAB preferred.
