Stan Matwin elected Fellow by the European Coordinating Committee on Artificial Intelligence.

The ECCAI is the federation of all European Artificial Intelligence societies from 28 countries. The highly selective ECCAI Fellows Program honours, in a competitive evaluation process, a small percentage of the total membership of all ECCAI member societies (up to a maximum of 3%).

The announcement was made during the 22nd International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Barcelona, Spain.

The ECCAI Fellows program has been started in 1999 to recognize individuals who have made significant, sustained contributions to the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in Europe. Fellows’ accomplishments range from pioneering advances in the theory of AI, to unusual accomplishments in AI technology and applications.Currently there are 125 ECCAI Fellows globally.

Earlier this year, Dr. Matwin was inducted as Fellow of the Canadian Artificial Intelligence Association.

Also in 2011, Dr. Stan Matwin received the Faculty’s 2011 George S. Glinski Award for Excellence in Research

In 2010, Professor Matwin received the CAIAC Distinguished Service Award.

Professor Matwin is a former president of the Canadian AI Association (CAIAC, formerly CSCSI) and of the IFIP Working Group 12.2 on Machine Learning. He is also the founding director of the Graduate Certificate in Electronic Commerce at University of Ottawa.

In 1997, Stan held the UNESCO Distinguished Chair in Science and Sustainable Development. In 2004, he was appointed foreign research associate of the Polish Academy of Sciences, where he received in 2010 a doctor of science degree for his substantial and sustained contribution to scientific knowledge.
