Mechanical Engineering Student Team Wins First place at ASME Design Expo
April 09, 2009
The University of Ottawa’s student delegation overpowered its competitors by winning first prize at the 2009 ASME Design Expo.
A special thanks goes to Dr. Atef Fahim, the capstone project supervisor, the University of Ottawa ASME student section, the Engineering Endowment Fund, and the Faculty of Engineering. Congratulations to the team members of T1 Technologies for their exceptional work!
Among the competitors were Michigan State University, Ohio Northern University and University of Dayton.
Competition Details
The final year capstone design project for mechanical engineering students at the University of Ottawa is done within the context of the course MCG 4322 and involves designing a fully programmable machine or mechanical system. The project aims at simulating the typical working environment of a high end practicing design engineer. It teaches students how to apply and integrate theoretical knowledge obtained throughout their engineering education towards the design of complex working machinery.
The project is not only about applying theory, but it also trains students in becoming efficient project managers and team players. The teams consist of nine students, and each team is divided into three groups of three students. Each group is assigned a particular subsystem of the entire system. In the fall of 2008, students were required to design a continuous freeze drying system for dehydrating foods.
The Mechanical Engineering Department selected one of the teams, T1 Technologies, to compete in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ (ASME) 2009 Design Expo Competition held at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio on the 28th of March, 2009.
The Design Expo is aimed towards students completing a capstone design project to present their work on a 4’ by 3’ poster. The poster is then judged on engineering background knowledge, design concept and analysis and overall poster quality.
