Girl Guide Badge Day 2012

May 18, 2012

On Saturday, May 5th, the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Engineering welcomed over 150 Girl Guides and their leaders from the greater Ottawa and Outaouais regions to the annual Girl Guide Engineering Badge Day.  The girls, ranging in ages from 8 to 12, participated in fun engineering activities animated by students from the Faculty.

Girl Guide Badge Day

This event takes place in several universities across the province to encourage female participation in Engineering.  The girls got a chance to visit the campus and had an opportunity to undertake hands-on activities such as:

  • visiting the mechanical engineering lab to build sheet metal for rockets
  • using an assortment of materials to build a contraption that brings a marble from point A to point B
  • solving a special crime using finger printing and blood typing
  • using their new knowledge about force to build stable structures
  • and many more.

Once the girls had completed the workshops, and meet standard requirements, they earned the Girl Guides Science and Technology: Engineering badge.

We sincerely thank all the units who joined us and look forward to the welcoming them again next year.
