Faculty of Engineering salutes trailblazing entrepreneurs

April 15, 2011

The Entrepreneurship and Innovation Endowment Fund at the Faculty of Engineering was created to address the challenge of increasing international competition in the introduction of innovative products and services, from research and development to manufacturing, commercialization and marketing.

By better equipping students with both technical and non-technical skills, the Faculty gives its graduates a competitive edge that resonates with the business and technology communities.

Two undergraduate teams that participated in the PEI Student Competition are proving they have the passion, drive and good ideas required to succeed.

Second-place winners - Contest Mob Inc.

Chibuike ilonze, Paulina Masson, Oleksii Barankevych
Contest Mob is a community for professional contestants, who enter online contests anywhere from every day to every week. Searching for contests and reading the rules is a time-consuming process. The Contest Mob application provides a large sweepstakes database with plenty of details about each contest, offers extensive search-sort options and, most importantly, features a contest entries organizer. No more Googling, no more reading the rules, and no more browser bookmarks to track entries.

Third-place winner - AeroTri

Matthew Conley, Francois-Xavier Bonneville, Antoine Schryer
Aero Tri will introduce a revolutionary device that will help triathletes significantly reduce their finishing times. By cutting the aerodynamic drag force created by riders’ bodies, we will be able to reduce the power they need to produce and ultimately make them faster. Various products to reduce drag of the bicycle itself are readily available on the market; however, the bicycle accounts for only 20% of the cyclist’s total aerodynamic resistance. Furthermore, the only device now used to fight aerodynamic drag on the rider’s body is an aerodynamic helmet, but it reduces the drag by only about 5%. That’s why there’s such a great opportunity for improvement with this new product.

Also entered in the competition was Vertigrow; Luc Lendrum and Duane van Gaalen (Telfer) took home first prize in the Undergraduate Category.

Good luck to these students in their future endeavours.
