Behnoosh Hariri receives a MITACS Postdoctoral Fellowship
April 29, 2011
Dr. Hariri has won a $55,000 MITACS’s Elevate Strategic Fellowship for her postdoctoral research in Video-Based Driver Drowsiness Monitoring. Driver drowsiness is the cause of 22 to 24 percent of car crashes, and results in a four- to six-times higher crash risk compared to driving while alert. The aim of Dr. Hariri’s research is to reduce the number of accidents due to driver fatigue and increase transportation safety by using video-based body and face gesture monitoring as signs of driver fatigue, including yawning, eye tiredness and eye movement, which indicate that the driver is no longer in a proper driving condition.
Behnoosh Hariri is supervised by Dr. Shervin Shirmohammadi from the School of EECS (formerly SITE). Dr. Hariri’s research has grabbed the attention of Cognivue Corporation. She is now working with Cognivue for the possible integration of her team’s work in their automotive smart camera systems.
Her research interests include Computer Vision, Multimedia Systems, Online Gaming, and P2P Overlay Networks.
Dr. Hariri is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in DISCOVER Lab. She has received her B.Sc., M.Sc. and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering in 2002 and 2004 and 2009, respectively from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran.
