Why choose us?
Ten reasons to choose our program in either Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Mechanical Engineering:
- Mechanical engineering is a very broadly-based area of engineering. We are proud of the broadly-based education we provide, which allows our graduates to find employment in all sectors of Canadian industry - high-tech, aerospace, manufacturing, automotive, building systems, energy, health care, chemical and consulting.
High quality teaching: The Department has many excellent teachers, who collectively have won a total of nine teaching awards, some at the national or provincial level. Our professors are also engaged in research in many exciting areas, such as robotics, exotic materials, biomedical engineering, aerodynamics and combustion.
Computing Technology Program: With 10 extra courses, requiring one or two extra semesters to graduation, you can do a degree in Computing Technology along with your Mechanical Engineering degree. This will open doors for you in the high-tech, manufacturing, automation, robotics and computer simulation fields. We were the first Canadian university to offer such a program.
Biomedical Mechanical Engineering: This program gives a comprehensive introduction to the mechanical applications of biomedical engineering on top of a strong foundation in mechanical engineering.
Co-op program. You can earn money and gain valuable experience during your studies.
We’re Canada’s University: You can take advantage of the bilingual character of the University of Ottawa to improve your knowledge of French. However, you do NOT have to take a French course or pass a French test to be admitted or to study here. All of our program is available in English; the first two years and some third year courses are also available in French.
Hands-on Design and Lab Work: Our curriculum is design-intensive and includes unique “mechanical dissection” labs which teach basic mechanical design concepts in a hands-on manner. Our undergraduate design lab has all the facilities needed to do design work for courses or projects.
Class sizes are smaller than those at many universities. You will enjoy closer contact with professors and more personal attention from staff.
City of Ottawa Life: As a downtown campus, we are close to the attractions that make Ottawa such a great city to live in.
Student Life: Mechanical engineering students have an active social network, with frequent get-togethers and informal design contests. There are also student chapters of professional organizations
