Biography:
Dr. Warith is Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa where he teaches courses in solid waste management, landfill design, geotechnical engineering and hydrogeology.
He is a specialist in landfill design and solid waste management and has designed landfill liners, leachate collection and landfill cover systems, modeled leachate generation rates and municipal solid waste settlement in existing landfill sites. Dr. Warith has also assessed marshland and wetland capacities for the attenuation of leachate generated from several landfill sites in Ontario. He has researched the migration of heavy metals and low-density hydrocarbon contaminated groundwater through soil and conducted hydrogeological investigations of contaminant transport in industrial sites. He has also designed pump and treatment systems for hydrocarbon-contaminated groundwater from a paperboard plant and other industrial facilities in Ontario.
Dr. Warith designed bioreactor landfill demonstration projects in Cairo and Sadat cities in Egypt as well as in Salvador, Brazil to examine the feasibility of employing bioreactor landfill technology in semi-arid and tropical environments to assist in controlling greenhouse gases (GHG) emission from solid waste sources. Dr. Warith is also involved in projects related to controlling emissions of landfill gas from closed and operating landfill sites. Dr. Warith research focus is on the optimization of bioreactor landfill operation, treatment of leachate and control emissions from landfill sites.
