Biography:
Dr. Dan Palermo, Ph.D, P.Eng., is an Assistant Professor of Structural Engineering and Manager of the Structures Laboratory at the University of Ottawa. Prior to joining the Department of Civil Engineering, he held academic and teaching positions at the University of Calgary, McMaster University, and the University of Toronto. Dr. Palermo is an active member of the Canadian Seismic Research Network (CSRN), the Canadian Association for Earthquake Engineering (CAEE), the American Concrete Institute Committee 447 Finite Element Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Structures, and the VecTor Analysis Group.
His doctoral studies consisted of the behaviour and analysis of three-dimensional reinforced concrete shear walls subjected to reverse cyclic loading. He was awarded several major scholarships including: NSERC PGS A, PGS B, and PDF; OGS Science and Technology Scholarship; and the Donald Jamieson Fellowship from the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering
Dr. Palermo’s research interests are in the area of hazard mitigation, including design, inelastic analysis, and retrofit of concrete structures for extreme loads, including seismic loading, tsunami-induced hydraulic loading, and blast loading.
