CONTACT - Engineering in your classroom
A day of engineering discoveries!
The work of engineers is all around us. Their innovations are an integral part of our
lives; they are in our vehicles, our computers, our cell phones, our food and pretty
much anything that we can imagine.
For this reason, the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Ottawa is proud to
offer several class activities that allow students to learn more about engineering
through its CONTACT program. Teachers will be able to choose one activity from
chemical engineering, robotics or programming. Following an introductory
presentation, students will have access to laboratory tools that will give them handson
experience in our facilities. It is an excellent opportunity for students to discover
the world of engineering.
Come join us for a fun-filled and educational school trip!

Workshops offered by the Faculty of Engineering
Chemical Workshop
The work of chemical engineers is all around us. Concerned with converting raw materials or chemicals into new and usable substances, chemical engineers are involved in everything from toothbrushes to makeup, biofuels to artificial skin.
This latest initiative will allow your students to explore the breadth of chemical engineering. They will use equipment from our undergraduate pilot plant facility to study heat transfer, mass transfer, fluid flow, measurement and material balances. A presentation on chemical engineering will be followed by two group experiments, giving students hands on experience. Your students won’t want to miss this exciting introduction to our Faculty of Engineering, and the field of chemical and biological engineering.

Robotics Workshop
Robotics has captured the imagination of the public for quite some time. It is rare to watch Saturday morning cartoons and not find an example of robots in action. Over the past few years, however, robotics has moved from science fiction to science fact. Robots are used the world over to build cars, defuse bombs, and conduct surgery. With each passing year, robots become a more integral part of our lives.
For this reason, the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Ottawa is proud to offer the Robotics CONTACT workshop. Accessible to anyone, the Robotics workshop introduces students to the core concepts of robot design while allowing them to have fun.

Programming Workshop
We have become a world dominated by computers. They are in our vehicles, our living rooms, and even in the palm of our hands. No matter where you find them, all of these computers have one thing in common: we can’t use them without software. Software runs the world but remains something of a mystery to many people.
It is for this reason that we have created the new Programming Workshop for our CONTACT program. Designed for beginners, the CONTACT Programming Workshop introduces students to world of computer programming by using a programming language called Processing that is visual and easy to learn. Processing is built on Java, so it also introduces students to some of the concepts they would learn about in an undergraduate Computer Science or Software Engineering degree.

Project Grants
Obtain grants for applied science, math and computer projects carried out within the courses you teach. Just send us a letter explaining your project, the date the funds are needed and how the Faculty of Engineering grant will help you make your project a reality. The letter must be signed by the principal of your school. To increase your chances of obtaining a grant, submit your project letter in the fall semester.
